Spiders are just a part of our every day lives here in Surprise AZ and just about everywhere else in the world. The only place you probably won’t find spiders is on the continent Antartica. They play an important role in our ecology by helping keep insect populations in check. In fact spiders eat more bugs than all of the worlds bats and birds combined. If it weren’t for spiders, the bugs would literally take over!

Of course many species of spiders will find their way into our homes and/or business’s, which isn’t what most folks want. Depending on the species, they may hide in places where you least expect them including under the bed, behind or under furniture, up in the corners of a room, around lighting and/or windows or even in a pair of shoes or boots. You may wanna shake out those pants you left on the floor last night before putting them back on.Though all species of spiders can spin silk, they don’t all make webs so you may not even know it’s there until you see it.

There is good news. Only a couple of commonly found species here in Surprise AZ are venomous to humans or our pets. Most spiders are not really a problem at all but are beneficial pests since all they do it eat bugs. Remind yourself of how ‘beneficial’ they are the next time you walk into a spider web in the middle of the night.

Spiders in Surprise AZ

As with most critters, spiders are actually pretty interesting creatures. Here’s some info about spiders that you may not know:

  • There are some 40,000 known species of spiders worldwide. It is commonly held that there are many more yet to be discovered.
  • Believe it or not, there are an estimated average of 1 million spiders or more per acre of land.
  • It’s believed that you are never more than 10 feet away from a spider. Every minute of every day.
  • In addition to eating insects, spiders also benefit our ecology by helping to pollinate plants.
  • The goliath spider is the world’s biggest, growing to a width of up to 11 inches. It’s fangs can be as much as a full inch long. It hunts and eats frogs, lizards, birds, snakes and mice.
  • The Brazilian Wandering Spider (or banana spider) is the world’s most venomous spider. It’s an extremely aggressive spider and is found in both South and Central America. Just a tiny bit of this spider’s venom can kill a human.
  • The tarantula spider, which is feared by people because of it’s size and appearance, actually has a rather weak venom that has little effect on humans. It’s bite is said to feel much like a sting from a wasp.
  • A spider’s silk actually comes out in a liquid state and hardens when introduced to air.
  • There are some species of spiders in tropical regions of the world that actually throw their webbing at their prey.
  • Some wolf spiders can cruise along at a speed of 2 feet per second.
  • Since spiders don’t have teeth, they cannot chew their food. They instead inject digestive liquids into their prey and suck up the innards.
  • Many spiders, including the Black Widow Spider, distribute or move through the air on a strand of silk. Where ever they land is where they call home.
